Livingston County News - 2/23/2017

On Feb. 27, the Mental Health Association, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the Reel Mind Theatre and Film Series and the Rochester Psychiatric Center will sponsor a presentation on the topic of suicide prevention.

The program is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Rochester Psychiatric Center in the Rehabilitation Building at 1111 Elmwood Ave., Rochester.

The program is free and open to the public. Free parking is provided.

Dr. Kim Van Orden, assistant professor of psychiatry, University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, will present a talk on suicide prevention and strategies for helping yourself and those you care about.

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. The goal of suicide prevention is to reduce factors that increase someone's risk for a suicide attempt such as depression and also to increase factors that promote resilience and coping such as social connectedness.

During the program, "Suicide Prevention: Strategies for Helping Yourself and Those You Care About," participants will discuss facts and myths about suicide and emphasize strategies to reduce risk.

The program will include a question-and-answer period.

Registration is requested. Call (585) 325-3145 ext.100.
