Press of Atlantic City - 8/22/2017

Family caregivers and professionals are invited to learn more about Alzheimer's disease research, treatments and developments at a seminar next month.

The Alzheimer's Association Delaware Valley Chapter will host Seminar by the Shore - a full-day conference on Alzheimer's caregiving, community resources and programs, advocacy and more - on Sept. 15 at Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club in Galloway Township.

The event will be put on with the help of community partners such as Acuity Healthcare, Fox Rehabilitaton, Holy Redeemer, Lourdes Health System, Royal Suites, Stockton University and others that donated money to the chapter.

Jolene Brackey, advocate for Alzheimer's and author of "Creating Moments of Joy," will be the opening keynote speaker and talk about her experience working with patients and creating a caretaking program called Enhanced Moments.

There will be 10-minute virtual dementia tours at the event for family members, organization members and healthcare professionals who look to better understand the physical and mental challenges of their loved ones or patients with dementias such as Alzheimer's disease.

Attendees may attend a morning and an afternoon breakout session from a choice of several options. Expert Marsha Weiner will lead a session called Cultivating Resilience Through the Arts, which will cover methods of combating compassion fatigue.

Other sessions include Tools and Tips for Managing Life as a Caregiver, led by Dr. Christine Gayada-Chelder, clinical psychologist with a specialty in neuropsychology and assistant professor at Stockton University. She will talk about the emotional, psychological, social and physical consequences of caregiving.

Charles C. Bratton II, founding member of sponsor Bratton Scott Estate and Elder Care Attorneys, will present Top Ten Programs Benefiting Seniors and Disabled Clients with Anne Markel-Crozier, director of care coordination.

The Understanding Advocacy in Caring for Your Loved One session, also led my Markel-Crozier, will go through advocacy 101 steps for family members.

Dr. David Roeltgen, medical director of Shore Medical Center's newly opened Flora Baker Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Center, will end the daylong conference as closing speaker and will present an overview of the current status of major Alzheimer's research.

The event is $100 for professionals who want to receive continuing education unit (CEU) hours, which can be done for registered nurses through Our Lady of Lourdes Health System and for social workers through Stockton University.

The conference is $40 for general admission, including family members and professionals who do not receive CEU hours. The golf club is located at 401 S. New York Road.

Participants must complete either the paper registration form and send it by mail to the Alzheimer's Association, Attn: Seminar By the Shore, 399 Market St., Suite 102, Philadelphia, PA 19106 by Sept. 8, or register online by Sept. 11.
