Deceased veterans entitled to dignified services

Lombard Suburban Life - 5/12/2017

The uniformed Navy servicemen presented the family with a folded U.S. flag, salutes were rendered and "Taps" was played. Although held in the front yard of the family's home, and not a cemetery, the brief service was "beautiful ? like being in a garden," said John Adolf, whose funeral home helped arrange the tribute to the deceased veteran. "There are multiple ways to provide honors, but it's always done in the most respectful manner," said Adolf, director and owner of Adolf Funeral and Cremation Services. "As funeral directors, we are privileged to coordinate these services for all eligible veterans and their families, and to make sure they are provided in the most dignified manner." Adolf said the funeral director will help the family of a deceased veteran make the arrangements with the veteran's branch of service and the Veterans Administration. Whether a veteran has chosen to have burial services take place in a national cemetery or a private cemetery, the casket or cremation urn would be received by an honor guard who would perform the services of folding and presentation of the American Flag to the family, and the playing of "Taps." The family also receives a Presidential Memorial Certificate as an expression of the nation's respect, and a military marker or medallion may also be ordered for placement in a private cemetery. There is no cost. The United States Navy may also be chosen to provide military honors for a deceased veteran with its Burial at Sea Program. Burial can take place with casketed or cremated remains. Also, Adolf many years ago also adopted the practice of providing every veteran's family with a solid hardwood flag case to store their flag, "as a token of our appreciation from our family," Adolf said.
