Bladen Journal - 5/19/2017

May 19--ELIZABETHTOWN -- The local chapter of the National Society Daughter of the American Revolution installed new officers for 2017-19 during their final meeting of the organization year this month.

New officers for the Battle of Elizabethtown Chapter include Regent Terry Smith, Vice Regent Linda Smith and Secretary Susie Wilkes; Treasurer Sharon Natale and Chaplain Cecile Bryan will also be new officers but were unable to be present for the installation.

The chapter met at Harmony Hall during its recent homecoming celebration. They laid a wreath in honor of Revolutionary War Patriot Nathaniel Richardson who was killed during the war; the wreath also honored other Bladen County residents who have served in the military and given the ultimate sacrifice. It was placed by outgoing Regent Linda Smith who is a United States Air Force veteran.

Harmony Hall board members Sunday Allen and Harry LaRock presented the program. They discussed ongoing preservation efforts at the site. Allen, a DAR member, volunteers with the East Bladen High School History Club; the students help with programs, maintenance and special event preparation. Other DAR members also serve in volunteer roles at the site and the chapter hopes to become more involved in future preservation and fundraising efforts. The following week, incoming Regent and Harmony Hall volunteer Terry Smith, aided by three East Bladen History Club member, hosted a group of third-graders or a tour of Harmony Hall.

During the business session, Regent Linda Smith reported on the April state conference. The chapter received a number of certificates of recognition. These included awards for workshop presentation and participation, conservation efforts, outstanding programs for women's health and diabetes awareness, volunteering with the Patriot Records Project and working with the Children of the American Revolution program. Member Sharon Natale was recognized for her work with the Patriot Records Project and as a Genealogical Records Program volunteer.

Several members of the chapter will attend the national Continental Congress in Washington, D.C., at the end of June. They will represent the chapter during the votes on decisions for the coming year for the organization and do research to assist new members who would like to join the organization. They will also deliver completed applications to the genealogical committee for approval. The chapter will reconvene in September for reports on the national event.
