County recognizes mental health in proclamation

May 25--Otero County Commissioners proclaimed the month of May, 2020 to be Recognition of Mental Health Month at the May 18Board of County Commissioners meeting.

"We don't do proclamations very often," said Commissioner Keith Goodwin. "I don't know when we did the last one. But this has to deal with mental health and the time going on right now this month. ... We just wanted to go on record and proclaim that this month be concerned about mental health."

Commissioner Jim Baldwin moved to approve the proclamation and Commissioner John Hostetler seconded it.

The commissioners also passed a resolution on May 18 to provide funding for the Lower Arkansas Valley Area Agency on Aging. The resolution will provide funding in the amount of $8,231 to the agency for the year of 2020.

Commissioner Keith Goodwin said participate with the agency along with the other counties in the six-county region (Baca, Bent, Crowley, Kiowa, Otero, and Prowers counties).

Hostetler moved to sign the resolution of participation; Baldwin seconded and the motion carried.

Area Agency on Aging provides services to persons age 60 and older. The organization assists seniors with accessing resources such as transportation, assisted living / care, nutritional and legal services.

Otero County Commissioners also proclaimed the month of May, 2020 to be Recognition of Mental Health Month.

Baldwin moved to approve the proclamation.
