Death of man found near stores on Lady's Island Tuesday ruled suicide

Island Packet - 3/1/2023

Mar. 1—The death of a man whose body was found Tuesday in a wooded area near a big box store on Lady's Island has been determined to be suicide, according to the Beaufort County Coroner's Office.

The Beaufort Police Department received a 911 call reporting the man's body was found just before noon Tuesday, according to Chief Deputy Stephenie Price, a spokesperson for the department.

Beaufort Police, the Lady's Island/St. Helena Fire District and the Beaufort County Coroner responded to the parking lot of the nearby Walmart on Sea Island Parkway.

The body was found in one of the wooded "ravine-like" areas between the store and the nearby strip mall, Price said. Officials blocked off the area with tape as the body was removed Tuesday afternoon.

Price said police had not been able to contact the man's family on Wednesday.

The Island Packet and The Beaufort Gazette do not typically write about suicides or suicide attempts unless there is a compelling reason to do so, such as occurring in a public setting or involving a newsworthy subject.
