(Video) Third grader's admiration spurs self-made fundraiser for local veterans

Cullman Times - 12/21/2019

Dec. 21--Calub Pruitt and Brandon, his dad, stopped by Cullman's V.F.W. post on Friday to share with local veterans the proceeds (and a Christmas ham) from Calub's self-started fundraising drive at Cullman Christian School, where he's a third-grade student.

Sporting an all-military outfit with a homemade cardboard helmet and the insignia of the U.S. Marines on his sleeve, Calub said he's always loved the military, and his fascination with America's fighting forces helped inform the shape of his fundraiser: making military-themed crafts and shopping them to his fellow students (and staff) at school.

"I really like the military, so I've been selling military items to raise money to donate to the veterans," he explained Friday. "I just ask around at school to see who wants to buy anything, and then I save the money."

"He makes a lot of stuff out of cardboard: planes, tanks; things like that," explained Brandon. "Then at break time or lunchtime, he opens up shop and sells them. We wanted to go ahead and bring what we had to the veterans before Christmas, so that's why we decided to donate the money this week."

So far, Calub's been able to offer up local veterans a Christmas ham, as well as the $37 and change he's collected from his one-man military charity. That may not sound like a ton, but the vets are grateful -- and they definitely let Calub know. "That'll buy a veteran a trip to Birmingham to go see a doctor," post commander and 26-year Army veteran Will Harris told Calub. "It'll more than pay for his gas -- and maybe even some chow on the side."
