New Duluth brewery is by veterans, for veterans

Duluth News-Tribune - 1/30/2021

Jan. 30—Two local veterans plan to open a new brewery in Duluth'sLincoln Park neighborhood with an eye toward offering financial and hands-on assistance to others who have served in the military.

Warrior Brewing Company's owners, Matt Caple and Ben Gibson, have a spot at 2711 W. Superior St., the former location of Lake Superior Brewing Company. They expect to be brewing by the end of March and offering their products in liquor stores soon after.

A percentage of proceeds will go to local nonprofits that serve veterans, Caple said, and they plan to offer informational brewing sessions also geared toward the same groups.

"We are tied very closely with the community and we intend give back," said Caple, who served in the U.S. Army and began homebrewing and volunteering at Rocky Mountain Brewery in Colorado Springs, Colorado, a decade ago.

At the start, there will not be on- or off-site sales available at Warrior Brewing Company, but they might offer limited taproom space as the business develops. The owners expect to brew handful of beers, including a light lager, a Russian Imperial Stout, an IPA and an ever-changing barrel-aged option.

Gibson, who started as a homebrewer while stationed at Vandenberg Air Force Base in Lompoc, California, was most recently a brewer at Canal Park Brewing Company.

"Being a disabled veteran, I've had a lot of opportunities from nonprofits that have helped me out," Gibson said. "This will be an important way to give back and shed light on some of the organizations, show other veterans who might not be aware of them, that there is help out there."

Caple is also behind Lake Superior Warriors, a nonprofit organization that helps disabled military veterans reintegrate and form camaraderie, through hockey.

"Get them out of their houses and out of their heads," he said.

Caple met Gibson while doing collaborative beer sessions with veterans at Canal Park Brewing Company.

Lake Superior Brewing Company, believed to be Duluth's oldest craft brewery, closed its Lincoln Park taproom in late 2019. Sarah and Seth Maxim, of Duluth, have purchased the business and plan to reopen the brewery in the former Sun City Tanning and Xcel Xercise building, 5324 E. Superior St., in the Lakeside neighborhood. It's tentatively expected to open this year.
