Warren Meyer recognized as Hometown Hero in November

Cheboygan Daily Tribune - 11/23/2021

Nov. 23—CHEBOYGAN — World War II Army veteran Warren Meyer from Cheboygan was recently honored by the Cheboygan County Veterans Services Subcommittee as the Hometown Hero for the month of November 2021.

Meyer was nominated to receive the award by Cheboygan Vietnam veteran Tom Smith. Smith doesn't know Meyer very well, but he always attended meetings with him at the Cheboygan VFW Post 3623 together.

"I knew that he was 95 years old and a World War II veteran, so I thought he should be recognized," said Smith. "He's one hell of a nice guy, though, that's all I can say."

Smith said he felt Meyer deserved the recognition for everything that he does for the community, even with being 95 years old.

"I don't know if there's another veteran in the county that is that old," said Smith. "There may be. But Warren deserved this award, so that's why I nominated him."

After being discharged from the military, Meyer returned to Cheboygan and became active in the community.

Now, in his 90s, Meyer still continues to be active in the Cheboygan community, teaching hunters' safety at the Cheboygan Sportsman's Club. He started teaching hunters' safety in 1947 and had been voted as the Hunter Education Volunteer Instructor of the Year in 2014.

Meyer also coached and managed youth hockey teams and was an active member of the Cheboygan Blue Liners Hockey Club for many years, as well as an active member of the VFW Post 3623 in Cheboygan. He is also a member of the Cheboygan Rotary Club.

Meyer and his wife, Jackie, also help out in the community whenever they can, including donating dozens of pairs of homemade mittens and hats to the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 274 to give to children through the Toys for Kids program.

Each month, the Cheboygan County Veterans Subcommittee — a committee established by the Cheboygan County Board of Commissioners — accepts nominations for veterans around the county the community feels needs to be recognized. The committee goes through the nominating applications and decides which of the veterans to honor each month as the Hometown Hero.

Anyone who would like to nominate a veteran to receive this award can fill out a form with the veteran's name, their branch of service and what years they served the country in the military. On the form, there is a place to include a short story as to why you are nominating the veteran and why you feel they are a hometown hero.

When submitting the applications, the veterans subcommittee asks there be photos of the veteran when they were in the service, as well as a current photo. This helps to feature the veteran in the Cheboygan Daily Tribune, as well as on the Cheboygan County Veterans Services office website.

Forms to nominate a veteran for this award can be picked up at the Cheboygan County Veterans Services office in the Cheboygan County Building in room 122, or printed off from www.cheboygancounty.net/veterans-services-101/. The forms can then be returned by dropping them back off to the veterans office, or by mailing them to Hometown Heroes, Cheboygan County Veterans Service, 870 S. Main St., Room 122, Cheboygan, MI, 49721.

Veterans have to be alive and able to participate to be considered for this award. Each veteran selected will receive a certificate signed by the Cheboygan County Board of Commissioners.
